Show Notes

Hurray!! Kicking and screaming out of a podcast nappy here is the very first episode! It might be a bit rough round the edges but squeezing this in between client work has been a challenge.

In Episode One we look at how to download and install the free version of ExpressionEngine. In no time you can be up and running with professional blogging software. All without spending a penny.

Installing ExpressionEngine

Installing ExpressionEngine is straightforward but you will need some knowledge of FTP and file permissions. If it is all to frightening for you the lovely people at EngineHosting will do it for you if you choose to host your site with them.

Installation requirements

The requirements page tells you what you need to run ExpressionEngine.

  • At least 10 MB of space
  • PHP version 4.1 or newer.
  • MySQL version 3.23.32 or newer.
  • PHP must have XML support.
  • Your server must have the following MySQL grant privileges (for tables): SELECT, INSERT, UPDATE, DELETE, DROP, ALTER, CREATE
  • Your MySQL server must not be running in Strict mode.

If you are not sure there is a handy Server Wizard that you can upload to your webspace to see if it is compatible.

Transferring the files

You'll need an FTP Client to transfer your files. I know I said "FTP Editor" in the video. That's wrong - the pant wetting excitement of the first episode was just too much.

If you are on a Mac I recommend Transmit or Cyberduck. For Windows there is SmartFTP or FileZilla. I'm not a Windows user so if you have any recommendations for good Windows FTP clients leave a comment.

Documentation

The documentation from EllisLab is here. If you get stuck try posting in the forums where there are lots of people who will help you out.

Music

This week's music is Aphex Twin - Selected Ambient Works 85-92. Buy it from iTunes.
